Emailogic Insights

3rd Quarter 2023

Focus on our EQ course

At Emailogic, we’ve recently been very excited to work with a long-standing customer on a fascinating programme, which has involved co-creation with both the customer and another provider.

The aim is to up-skill staff in meta skills. By this, we mean specifically focusing on skills which are uniquely human, at a time when there is both concern and enthusiasm in equal measure regarding the consequences artificial intelligence will have for the future of work.

There are three elements to the programme – Thinking, Learning and Connecting Skills.  The first element we have worked on is ‘Connecting Skills’, and a major part of this is Emotional Intelligence.

Connecting with other people is something that sounds easy but, in reality, can be hard to achieve. ‘Only connect’ is the theme which runs through E M Forster’s Howard’s End, in which he laments the difficulty of developing real connections with others. Developing your EQ, which is possible at any age, is fundamental to this quest.

We have used our existing 90 minute ‘Understanding Emotional Intelligence’ session to help delegates explore the fundamental elements of Daniel Goldman’s EQ model. We focus on two of Goleman’s five elements - namely self awareness and self recognition. We reflect on what these mean in practice, and how delegates can increase their competency on both elements significantly, through reflection, theory, and practical application.

How We Help Our Customers

Amy Bollato-Velda, Learning and Development Manager at Rabobank (a Dutch multinational banking and financial services company), was looking for a partner organisation to design and deliver a range of interpersonal skills interventions to all employee segments across Europe. It was essential that the partner could tailor the interventions to fully encompass Rabobank’s Values and Behaviours Framework, and their 12 Skills Foundation which underpins all their behaviour change work.

Customer Objectives
To deliver a series of fast-paced, short, live, virtual training interventions, to ensure all staff had access to the interpersonal skills required to align with the bank’s Values, Behaviours and Skills.

The courses had to be tailored to explicitly reflect the Rabobank processes, procedures, culture and direction of travel. The target was for 80% of staff attending any course to feel it would benefit their work.

Solution
Emailogic created a small project team, consisting of 3 key Emailogic staff (two senior consultants and a project manager) and 3 Rabobank staff (an L&D Manager, a Strategic HR Business Partner), to better understand the real-life context, and logistics support). The project team met regularly to plan and deliver the first set of courses.

The delegate feedback was extremely positive, and on the back of this delivery Rabobank have engaged Emailogic to deliver a suite of courses across the following range of interpersonal skills:

Managing Change, Challenging Conversations Personal Influence, Developing Your Personal Brand, Setting SMART Objectives, Effective Virtual Appraisals, Effective Virtual Meetings and Blended Meetings, Think Plan and Act Strategically and Psychological Safety.

Result
Feedback from the programmes has been outstanding, with all attendees saying that the course was a good use of their time and would support them in practicing the key interpersonal skills required in their roles.

The Rabobank HR team appreciate our ability to condense a large number of complex ideas and theories into a pacy interactive session, and to include relevant reflection and experiential learning to fully embed the behaviours. They see the Emailogic products as “robust and sturdy”, tightly scripted in places to drive engagement coupled with expert facilitation to enable engagement by all delegates without the session veering off-track.

“Working with Emailogic is a genuine pleasure.  We started off with a simple contract for hosting 1 particular workshop, and after successful feedback we looked at other topics.  From there onwards, Emailogic have grown their output in terms of everyday employee and manager skills significantly and at times so effectively, that they are now part and parcel of our annual curriculum for employees in Europe.  All their workshops cover the lifecycle of an employee whether for manager or employee, and the behavioural change we have seen from this has been quite noticeable, in particular around effective appraisals, goal setting but also hybrid working, which was a huge topic for us last year and going into this year.  A steady and trustworthy relationship”.
