Coaching skills for managers FAQs

What coaching skills does a manager need?

A manager who is strong in coaching has all the typical soft-skills associated with being strong at developing networks and relationships. These include, but are not limited to, active listening, empathy, assertiveness, and giving great feedback. We believe there are three key aspects to the coaching relationship which the manager needs to master: being able to structure and manage the conversation, building great rapport, and the ability to set specific goals in dialogue with the coachee.

How can coaching help my team improve their skills?

Coaching firstly helps an individual to get focus on the right priorities in their day-to-day and their longer-term work. It then supports people in delivering great performance against their goals, through providing a safe environment for them to reflect on how they are approaching their work, what the obstacles to effective performance are and how they can overcome them. This empowerment and support tends to motivate individuals to explore their own development, and a virtuous cycle of development and performance results.
