Understanding Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a key indicator of success in the modern workplace, and is increasingly being seen as a major driver of improved performance. Understanding Emotional Intelligence FAQs

Can my team be trained to be more emotionally intelligent?

The short answer to this is ‘yes’! Unlike IQ, which is fairly well fixed, anyone can improve their emotional intelligence (EQ) with awareness, practice and training. EQ consists of being aware of your emotions, and learning to manage them, while also becoming more tuned in to the emotions of others and managing your social interactions. Once your people start being more aware of their emotional reactions and interactions, they can then better choose their actions which leads to improved individual and team performance.

What can I do to improve my emotional intelligence?

The first step is to observe how you feel in the moment, rather than reacting in a situation and then regretting it later (you were probably overly aggressive) or wishing you had said or done something (you may have been too passive). Monitor your emotions, especially in stressful situations, and pay attention to how you then react and interact to other people.

If you are tuned into your feelings you can then do something about your behaviour – you can regulate your feelings and choose a response, rather than reacting through being triggered. Then you can begin to take responsibility for your actions, and not to blame others for how you’re behaving.

How can I tell if someone is emotionally intelligent?

Someone with high EQ will be able to regulate their behaviour in any given situation, regardless of the external stimulation and context. They will take responsibility for their own actions, and will have a strong network of supportive colleagues and friends as other people will feel safe and supported in their presence.

What are the traits of an emotionally intelligent person?

An emotionally intelligent person will be calm and collected and will seem in control and fully responsible for their own words and actions. They will usually be very good at asking pertinent and appropriate questions, and very good at listening, not just to what is being said but what isn’t being said. They will be fully present in situations, and able to articulate how they feel. Finally, they will support and nurture their personal networks.

Is it possible to teach adults emotional intelligence?

Yes, it’s absolutely possible to teach people of any age to have greater emotional intelligence. If someone is motivated to learn, and want to develop their EQ, they will pick up tools and techniques and their EQ will grow exponentially. In fact, developing our EQ should be an ongoing pursuit for people, whatever their age, as it has been proven to lead to more success and happiness in work and in our personal lives.
